A Note from Bill

Fully Committed continues my exploration of a territory I love deeply: high-speed, high-stakes clowning and physical comedy. Comedy like this demands rigor from a director: wit, wordplay, rich character development, and the exhilarating precision of clowning.

Becky Mode's brilliant comedy sends one actor hurtling through more than thirty characters at breakneck speed. It is a theatrical high-wire act, requiring total control while creating the illusion of complete comic abandon.

I first directed the play at TheaterWorks in Hartford (2019) and returned to it at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre (2026). At the heart of both productions was my close collaboration with Jamison Stern, whose fearlessness and virtuosity pushed every character toward greater specificity, clarity, and glorious ridiculousness. Together we hunted for the physical, vocal, and emotional details that make each person instantly recognizable, all while keeping the entire machine moving at full velocity.

For me, Fully Committed is a celebration of the actor's imagination and of the type of comedy I find thrilling, where precision creates freedom, discipline unlocks chaos, and the ridiculous becomes its own form of artistry.
