A Note from Bill

Sue Frost, Associate Producer at Goodspeed Opera House, invited me to lunch with the esteemed British playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn to see if I might be a good candidate to assist him on the U.S. premiere of By Jeeves, the musical he had written with Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber.

We hit it off, and a few weeks later I was by Alan’s side as he crafted a witty, wonderful world of madcap adventures for Bertie and Jeeves.

Alan taught me what it means to be a resident director and how to care for a work and a company over a long run.

His wit, theatrical imagination, and astonishing facility with language remain an inspiration for me to this day.
